The Climate Change Performance Index published by Beirut-based and the Bonn-based  Germany non-profit has also contributed to this year’s report.

▪️The CCPI 2020 monitors the development of all greenhouse gas emissions of 56 countries and the EU, which are together responsible for more than 90% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

▪️According to the report, 31 of the 57 high emitting countries are responsible for 90% of emissions.

▪️China, one of the largest polluters improved in its ranking and was placed in medium category.

▪️US and Saudi Arabia were the major polluters. They hardly showed signs of reducing their green house gas emissions.

▪️US ranked the last followed by Saudi Arabia and Australia.

▪️Ranked , India broke into the countries for the first time this year.

▪️The report rates the country’s 2030 mitigation targets as high on ambition, and praises its 2030 energy targets as one of the very few compatible with limiting global mean temperature rise to less than 2 degrees Celsius (°C).

▪️The report notes that though may mean it is under less “moral pressure” to upgrade its climate targets, it has experienced the largest emission increase in the past half-decade.

▪️This, the report argues, together with the huge opportunities for poverty alleviation presented by the energy transformation means that India too must enhance its ambition.

▪️Published annually since 2005, It tracks countries’ efforts to combat climate change.

▪️As an independent monitoring tool it aims to enhance transparency in international climate politics and enables comparison of climate protection efforts and progress made by individual countries.

▪️The implementation phase of the Paris Agreement enters a crucial phase in 2020, where countries are due to submit their updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

▪️CCPI assigns scores to countries on four parameters, namely
“GHG Emissions” (40 %),
“Renewable Energy” (20 %),
“Energy Use” (20 %),
“Climate Policy” (20 %).
